Zer0 Sum

Atlas Mugged

Catch A Ride

The last two episodes don’t have complete pages but I’m linking them anyway.

Escape Plan Bravo

The Vault of the Traveler

Canon Point: Between episodes Atlas Mugged and Catch A Ride, after Fiona’s grenade blows
Age: No confirmed age, but wiki says 27 and I agree with it.
God Houses:

NJORD: “Artful language” is a bit of a stretch, but Rhys is definitely the kind of person to try to bullshit his way through things with words, and might lie or withhold truths to get what he wants, and manipulate people. It’s just the way things work on the corporate ladder! You can’t wear your heart on your sleeve if you want to make it to the top and, boy, he wants to make it to the top.

TYR: Honestly, Rhys is a coward, but he’s really damn ballsy for a coward. Only someone with a lot of courage or a lot of stupidity would mess with a guy who will legit throw you out an airlock to get his way. And Rhys will do that shit. He will intercept the trade of a Vault Key (really valuable things, everyone wants one, because it’ll open treasure troves for you, or at least that’s what the stories say) and risk getting thrown out an airlock just because he can’t stand the idea of that guy sitting in what should be his office. And also because wow he wants a Vault Key. This is most likely the god house he'll end up in.

MIMIR: Rhys might have very stupid – or brave – ideas, but they are very elaborate ideas. He’s not a fighter, but a thinker. The plans might be stupidly ballsy a lot of the time, but he hasn’t gotten where he is by being cautious, and the point is that he’s the guy with the plans. Sneaking back onto a space station with super high security that you’re not welcome on isn’t easy, but he managed, if with some hiccups along the way. Because his plan was flawless. Until it wasn’t, but we don’t talk about that.

Personality: First impression of Rhys is probably going to be that he’s not very smart. He tends to put his foot in his mouth a lot, stumbles over his words, stutters and offends people left and right, and often says the obvious. It’s also worth noting that he’s got a violent megalomaniac as an idol. He also probably comes off as a weakling and, honestly, he is. He’s got the strength of a noodle. His right arm is strong only because it’s made of metal and has no muscle that can deteriorate. He’s a businessman, all right? He hasn’t needed any muscle!

What you might not realise is that he’s climbed quite high up the corporal ladder of a corporation in the Borderlands-verse, and if you think corporations in the 21st century are fucked up, I don’t even know what to call the ones here. And he’s set his sights on becoming the CEO of the biggest and baddest corporation around: Hyperion. He hasn’t done this by being kind and loving and smelling the flowers, no, he’s done it by manipulating, lying, playing dirty, and almost certainly getting people killed along the way. That’s just how it works.

Basically, he’s kind of a giant asshole, because that’s what you have to be to get anywhere in Hyperion. He’ll use people to get his way, and he might feel bad about it but he’ll still do it over and over again. He’ll shove his foot in his mouth and say stupid things but ultimately he’s pretty good at not giving away the fact that he would happily stab you in the back the next chance he gets if you’re in the way of what he wants.

Buuut he’s not all bad. Honestly. He does have a sense of right and wrong, it’s just that he’s gone and accepted that things just are a certain way and you have to play the game if you want to get anywhere. Which is realistic, really, because if you’re too idealistic or kind people are going to step all over you. That’s how it works. This doesn’t mean he enjoys it. If he believed he could’ve achieved his goals by being nice, he probably would have.

Probably.

He’s got friends that he’ll protect best he can, preferably without needing to risk his life but will also most likely do that. His best friend, Vaughn, has been with him since they were students, even when Rhys was almost kind of a jock and Vaughn was just a giant nerd. They’ve got each other’s backs, and trust each other perhaps a bit too much? But it hasn’t bit them in the ass yet. Once Rhys has decided someone’s family, he’s loyal to that person (or robot), perhaps all the more because you can’t really trust anyone in this galaxy.

Everything considering, lack of muscle and any kind of fighting capabilities aside, Rhys is a pretty brave guy. Stupidly brave a lot of the time, but he’s willing to risk his life for his friends and is actually fairly capable at using melee weapons. Just probably don’t give him a gun. What I mean is especially if he likes you (and probably not if he doesn’t), he will jump into a life-threatening situation to help you out as best he can. This may or may not actually help.

He’s also genuinely pretty funny and tries not to take life too seriously, often at the risk of getting punched or kicked or shot (see his habit of shoving his foot in his mouth) with sarcastic comments and dry jokes. If he can insult you while being funny that’s even better! Especially if it leaves you confused as to whether it was an insult or not.

Despite the list of frankly terrible deeds and personality traits, he’s kind of charming. That is, when he’s not talking to people on Pandora who hate Hyperion and he’s wearing a vest with the Hyperion logo on it. It sort of makes them immediately dislike and mistrust him. Aside from that people tend to like him. (This helps immensely when you want to betray them later.)
